Mental Health: Let's Talk About It More

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another blog. Today I'm going to talk about a really important topic that needs way more awareness than it gets. I think we all are aware of who Simone Biles is. For those who don't know, she is one of the most successful gymnasts in the entire world. So during the recent Olympics, she had to opt-out of the Group Finals in her sport due to mental health problems. She was fearful that she'd cost her team a medal, and so she backed out like she should have because she wasn't in the right mind to perform, she just had too much pressure on her back. Honestly, she got more hate than she got support. Many people just said that she was a 'weak' person for backing out. The thing is, that mental health is as important as physical health. I know we say that this issue has been getting more and more attention, but hearing about this incident, I'm honestly back to square one with my perspective on things changing. I think the importance of

Uke and Me :)

I've always been extremely eager to learn new things, try them out and you know...just explore. People see something, and gradually develop an interest in it. Well, I'm different in that case because the way I develop an interest is the complete opposite. I see something and tada, hello new interest! Then, you can say, it becomes kind of an obsession for meπŸ˜‚. Day and night, one thing revolves around my mind. My family literally gets irritated because I keep mentioning that obsession again and again. And to be honest, I do become a bit irritating at that time. Can't help it mate!πŸ˜‚ And, that obsession and desire, if fulfilled, never really goes away.

So, I'm a person who likes to explore YouTube. One minute I'm watching a video about a guy teaching me the French Revolution, and you look at me the next minute, and I will be found watching a guy build a raft in the middle of nowhere. So, I randomly came across a video 3 months ago. It was an America's Got Talent audition, and an 11-year-old, Grace VanderWaal, was auditioning. The moment I saw her play the instrument and sing, I realized this is my next interest and I really want to try this out. And then, the search began. I did innumerable Google searches to actually figure out information about this instrument.

Then I discovered a new thing, a Ukulele. Now before you go and look it up on the web, you must know that IT IS, MOST CERTAINLY, NOT A GUITAR.πŸ˜‘ I put it up on my WhatsApp status, I got like a million texts saying, "Oh my god you started learning the guitar! Cool!" And I was like, "NO!" So, yeah now go look it up. Read about it. It's a really interesting instrument. It's not that common, but it's really cool.

I was at my grandma's place when I had this interest-attack and I didn't know much about the shops around the town. And for that situation, Google came into the picture as my best friend again. I searched so much, gathered phone numbers, enquired about the ukuleles they had, and much more. Sometimes I'd get nervous about talking to a stranger and would just hand over my phone to my mom. But, her response would always be, "It's your interest, and if you want a ukulele, talk to this guy on your own." πŸ˜’ And then I would always gather courage and talk, and it wasn't too bad.

So finally, I found a shop with high ratings and a good variety of ukuleles. And guess what, the impatient me just took my mom and went to the store the very next day. Even my mom must've been thinking, "Let me just buy her this thing so that I wouldn't have to hear more about itπŸ˜‚" I was overwhelmed with happiness when I got my first ukulele. Then, I found this AMAZING YouTuber, Elise Ecklund, who has a channel all about ukuleles. And now, my feed is filled with more of Elise's videos than of random guys constructing rafts! πŸ˜‚

In case you are wondering, yes, I still play it every day and I still am obsessed with it. Remember I told you that once my desire is fulfilled the interest never really goes away? My uke is one of the best things that I have now and this COVID 19 lockdown period has been a bit of help in learning something new. But don't forget dear Coronavirus, I still hate you to a high extent okay!! πŸ™„

I hope you liked reading about the journey of my ukulele. Fill the comments with your interests and obsessions, and how you are pursuing them! ✨
