Mental Health: Let's Talk About It More

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another blog. Today I'm going to talk about a really important topic that needs way more awareness than it gets.

I think we all are aware of who Simone Biles is. For those who don't know, she is one of the most successful gymnasts in the entire world. So during the recent Olympics, she had to opt-out of the Group Finals in her sport due to mental health problems. She was fearful that she'd cost her team a medal, and so she backed out like she should have because she wasn't in the right mind to perform, she just had too much pressure on her back. Honestly, she got more hate than she got support. Many people just said that she was a 'weak' person for backing out.

The thing is, that mental health is as important as physical health. I know we say that this issue has been getting more and more attention, but hearing about this incident, I'm honestly back to square one with my perspective on things changing.

I think the importance of a healthy mind should be talked about from the very beginning, even in schools. Mental health issues shouldn't be something that should be considered 'hush-hush'.A survey says, that almost half the people with mental issues like depression and anxiety prefer to go through it rather than book an appointment with a therapist because they're scared of being judged.

Personal experience here, I was surfing youtube a couple of days ago and I came across a video called "Honest therapy talk with Parents." I decided to play it and I was disappointed in seeing how the video portrays that Indian parents don't like when their children ask for enrolling in therapy. This right here is our mindset towards it.

It's also proven that people with mental health issues die 25 years earlier than those with a normal physical health condition.

The first and foremost thing we need to do is talk about it openly. It needs to be talked more about in books, campaigns need to be done. Alongside the paragraph of 'how to maintain physical health' in our books, there should be one for mental health too.

We really need to talk about how important loving own ourselves is before we go on to love someone else.

What mental health needs are more candor, more sunlight, and more unashamed conversations.

It's really important that we encourage and help people with such issues rather than call them weak and put them down. I've personally seen some people go through it and it's honestly really terrifying. We as a society need to be much more accepting.

Saying to such people that 'It's just in your head, you're thinking too much into it, it will be fine' will not help them. Moreover, it will just make them more conscious about themselves and will probably hate themselves more and think that they are 'worthless'.

By not accepting these issues we're basically claiming potential lives. We're increasing suicide rates, and honestly, this needs to stop. This needs to be changed. And this change starts with us.

Please, talk about it more and assure people that they matter. Do not ignore the signs of such issues and help your loved ones or literally anyone you know who goes through this.

Help the world by bringing a change, just by mere conversations and awareness.

Signing off :)
